You saw it here first!

I was shopping last night at Urban Outfitters, and I couldn't help wondering if their buyers or designers have been reading Crochet Today. Looks like a couple of pillows they're selling are mightly similar to patterns we've run in the past. Check it out:

This pillow is currently on sale at Urban:

Is it just me, or is that awfully similar to the Color Wheel Pillow from the March/April 2008 issue of Crochet Today?

And I also spied this pillow in the store:

Which looks pretty similar to this one from May/June 2009, the Colorful Cushion:

Imitation is the best form of flattery! Well, if you want to make these super-trendy, Urban-Outfitters-approved pillows yourself for a fraction of what they cost in the store, you can always order Crochet Today back issues at 800-865-7240.

Crochet Today's archives

I am making the "Have a Ball" ornament featured in the Nov/Dec issue. It is turning out very nicely. I would love to make the ornament shown in the photo labeled "Before 1980" which is in the archives. Is it possible to get the directions for the vintage ornament?

Thank you.

Boycott Urban Outfitters!!

Urban Outfitters is infamous for stealing designs from small designers. (just do a google search, they have done this a LOT) It's awful that the big guys can poach off the small ones without consequence.

I've noticed a few crochet

I've noticed a few crochet pieces cropping up in Urban Outfitters, including granny square afghans.  But that round zig-zag pillow?  That's so 70's retro!!  My mom had several of these when I was a kid.  Still has at least one them, actually.  The Crochet Today version is more original, but the retail pillow is a complete knock off from someone's grandmother! LOL

Why Crafters Have Difficulty Getting A Fair Price

I do not see this as imitation best for of flatter.  I see it as the reason why indepenent crafters who try to sell their products at a fair price can't.  Urban Outfitters most likely paid some poor woman in a third world country a dollar or less to crochet these pillows that they then sell in this country at a price that independent American crafters can't compete with and make a profit.  I have run into this in too many way and forms.  Big retalers buy item that crafters in this country are making and trying to sell from third world countries where the pay the people very little.  In the example above they would have paid some poor woman the equavalent of $1 to make a bunch of these pillows and then sold them in their stores for $25.  Less import taxes they would still probably make $20 per pillow.  For an independent crafter if they sale the same pillow for $25 they may just break even.  It is even worse when it comes to clothing.

Selling

If they can sell items in big shops then is it OK for me toll items seen on the magazine? I will mention I saw the pattern in the Crochet today! though

Hmmm

I definitely see it in the first example but not so much in the 2nd... either way - I'd rather spend the time crocheting my own "trendy" pillow than spend 10x the money in any store.
